Frequently Asked Question
What is counselling?
Counselling gives you a platform to share your innermost thoughts and feelings. It helps you to understand your thought processes, explore your own triggers and behaviours to gain an understanding of what is causing them. Counselling helps you to talk things through with a fully trained counsellor to design coping strategies and ways to bring about a more healthy mental health change in your life whilst giving you ongoing emotional support. A counsellor’s role is to work with you to make sense of your emotions, gain new insights about yourself and help you find positive solutions in a non-judgemental, safe and confidential setting.
How does counselling work?
If you find it difficult to talk to family and friends about any issues you are experiencing, counselling is an opportunity for you to talk to someone confidentially about your issue or whatever is troubling you without judgement.
A counsellor will listen to you and ask questions to understand your thought process, feelings and behaviours and examine any underlying issues and triggers. The next step will involve techniques and solutions to help you manage and ultimately resolve your particular situation whilst emotionally supporting you throughout. One of these objectives is to work out what is stopping you from achieving your full potential and to work out what improvements you need to make to lead a happier and healthier life.
What can I expect from my counsellor?
Angie will treat you with the utmost respect, she will emotionally support you throughout every session towards your recovery and your sessions will be completely confidential. Angie will not tell you what you need to do, but she will make positive suggestions and enlighten you to looking at situations from a different perspective. Angie will give you the skills and tools to help you manage problems and situations effectively.
How many sessions do I need?
Angie will determine how many she feels you need based on your original assessment, however, everybody is different and every situation and counselling plan is different. You may feel better after only a few sessions, it depends on the severity of your situation. We offer open-ended counselling sessions, ongoing counselling sessions (as and when you feel you need one) and longer-term basis counselling sessions.
What should I expect from a session?
An assessment is conducted which involves Angie explaining the framework for counselling, timings and lengths of sessions.
Following this, sessions are arranged and can be conducted by telephone, zoom or face to face, whatever makes you feel more comfortable. In each session, Angie will ask you how you are feeling which gives you the opportunity to discuss your thoughts and feelings. Angie will listen and gently ask you to explore your feelings more deeply to offer you ways of insight.
When will I start to see improvements?
Everyone is different and so improvements vary from person to person. You may notice after a few sessions positive changes to thoughts, feelings and general wellbeing, however, it really depends on the person and how complex their situation is. A level of willingness and commitment to the process ensures a positive outcome for anyone wanting to see and feel improvements.
Will my sessions be confidential?
Counselling is completely confidential except in circumstances where a criminal offence is disclosed during the session or a person discloses that they intend to harm themselves or someone else. During the assessment, this will be discussed with you.
If you are struggling and looking for confidential counselling services in Essex, we offer private therapy to individuals, families, couples, young adults and children face to face, over the phone or online via zoom.
